Are Protein Bars Really Healthy or Are They Just Candy in Disguise

One of the most sought after snack items among individuals seeking rapid nutrition that doesn’t involve preparing a meal is the protein bar. These snacks are easy to take along and convenient to consume and are also touted as a healthy choice for individuals concerned with fitness and living a healthy lifestyle. Not all protein bars are the same, and individuals are often surprised to learn that some of these bars are no healthier than candy.

Most of these bars have a good portion of high quality protein that works well for the healing of muscles, the control of hunger, and the promotion of steady energy within the body. This is very useful for individuals who often work out and those who lead busy lives that make it difficult to have meals every day.

The issue arises with bars that have a high concentration of sugar, artificial sugars, and lower quality ingredients. These bars might be topped with a high concentration of syrups and chocolate that are high in calories and contribute very little nutritional value to the body. The other issue might be the low quality proteins that are very difficult to digest. Reading the nutrition label is essential since two bars that look the same may have different nutritional effects.

An ideal protein bar should contain a recognizable source of protein, whether it be whey, pea, soy, or a combination of the aforementioned. The fiber level should not be extremely high, and the bar shouldn’t contain a high level of added sugars. If the list of ingredients reads like a science project, the bar is not ideal for daily consumption.

Yet a protein bar might be useful, but using them selectively would be the best way to go. Using a protein bar to supplement your normal meals would be appropriate instead of using them and missing meals. Chicken, eggs, nuts, and even beans are much healthier than a protein bar. Yet, a clean protein bar could be a good option if you are extremely busy.

If you make the right choice, protein bars are a beneficial addition to any nutritional plan and will work well within even the busiest of lifestyles. They are convenient and practical if you know what you are buying.
